Liberal Party’s 2025 election platform tax measures

On 28 April 2025, subject to any potential recounts, the federal Liberal Party was re-elected with a minority government. As it stands at the time of writing, the Liberal Party has 169 seats and will thus need the support of a few members of the opposition parties – likely from the New Democratic Party or the Bloc Québécois – to adopt their commitments, which include a number of proposed tax measures for individuals and corporations (a minimum of 172 seats is required to have a majority of seats in the House of Commons).

This will be a federal budget unlike any other in Canadian history. It comes at a pivotal time and in the wake of significant political upheaval. Businesses should consider preparing for announcements aimed at supporting sectors of the economy that could be affected by evolving US policies. Key areas of focus include the housing situation, the challenges within our healthcare system, and the evolving discussions around environmental and climate initiatives, such as Canada’s carbon tax. These are the big-ticket items Canadian businesses should start to think about now.
