At EY, we believe in giving Tech Consultants the guidance they need to harness their natural curiosity. Sunny, a Manager in Insurance Platforms, shares his story of how mentoring and support have helped him drive meaningful change for clients.

I am an avid technology nerd, with a keen interest in the arts, politics, practicing pottery and photography. At EY, I am a member of the Insurance Platforms team, where I work on some of our biggest projects for leading insurers in the UK and EMEIA market.

Why EY?

There’s a tendency when working in technology to focus on the next greatest thing. What I have learned in the Technology Consulting Team however, is the importance of the role we play in the technology space. Our purpose is to act as the rational voice when considering the very real problems our clients face, alongside the exponential rise of technological disruptors in their world. Belonging to this team has meant two very important things to me. Firstly, I have comfort knowing that I can express my curiosity to the fullest with all the access EY provides. Secondly, the guidance and mentoring I have received means that I am able to leverage this curiosity in the balanced manner our clients need. In short, it means that I can be the most authentic version of myself whilst driving meaningful change for our clients.

Shaping my future with confidence

About halfway through my time at EY I felt like I was plateauing. It threw off my self-confidence and I recall conversations with my mentors about this feeling. They put me onto a project that provided all the challenges I hadn’t realised I was missing in my work. I grew more in that following year than in the preceding three years. That experience has always lived with me as an example of what I am capable of when given the chance. It’s something I go back to often to regain confidence in myself whenever I feel it waning.

Developing in my role

As we advance in our tech careers, it's easy to get distracted by new trends. My curiosity often leads me in this direction. Fortunately, mentors have guided me to balance my interests with my responsibilities. Their advice helped me develop skills in effective information processing, allowing me to stay updated on trends in a way that benefits my work. This approach is now integral to how I manage and apply knowledge in my professional life.

Feeling inspired

The Insurance Platforms leadership inspires me daily. Their diverse perspectives on business growth have fostered a team with a clear purpose and strong market understanding. Their openness in sharing experiences and knowledge has demonstrated how rewarding our consulting careers can be, both professionally and personally.
