My journey in International Tax and Transaction Services

Meet Sukhmani, a senior in the International Tax and Transaction Services (ITTS) team based in London. Sukhmani shares her experience of taking part in the EY Young Tax Professional of the Year programme (YTPY), and how the culture of continuous learning and support at EY is helping her advance her career.

About me

My journey at EY began in 2021 on a summer internship. After successfully completing the programme and leaving university, I joined EY as a graduate in 2022 working in our International Tax and Transaction Services (ITTS) team. Within my role, I assist clients across various service streams, including tax due diligence, structuring, modelling, and funds flow services.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my golden retriever Champ and teaching him new tricks. We participate in local competitions, where I've earned the nickname "dog whisperer" for my ability to understand and communicate with dogs.

Expanding my global connections

A highlight of my time at EY so far has been participating in EY Young Tax Professional of the Year (YTPY), an international competition designed to reward and foster the next generation of tax leaders.

As part of the competition, I was able to travel to Vancouver for an event to present my ideas on how technology and AI will shape the future of tax. I received exceptional mentorship from my team ahead of the event, who helped me refine my presentation style and technical approach.

Throughout the competition, I was able to connect and form lasting connections with other young tax professionals, engage with global leaders, and deepen my understanding of international tax issues.

EY Young Tax Professional of the Year was an unforgettable experience and one that has helped accelerate my growth and development.

Career development and growth

Our teams foster an environment where continuous learning is encouraged, and team members support each other's growth and development.

Since joining EY, I have received exceptional mentorship from my career counsellor, who provides regular feedback and guidance to help me identify my strengths, and encourages me to explore experiences and projects that will help me grow and develop.

I’ve also received fantastic support from my team, who have guided me through challenging projects and provided insights into how I can continue learning and refining my technical skills.

I now find great fulfilment in providing the same support and guidance I’ve received to new joiners.

Misconceptions about working in tax

The biggest misconception about working in tax is that every day consists of monotonous number crunching. But the reality is quite different.

My day-to-day activities can vary significantly depending on the type and stage of each deal - every day presents unique challenges and opportunities to develop.

Tax is constantly evolving, and my role involves understanding clients' specific needs and adapting my approach to offer the most impactful solutions, collaborating with overseas teams on diverse projects, and building meaningful relationships both across EY and with our clients.

Tax at EY is so much more than crunching data.
