How do we switch to low carbon travel with jet zero and green shipping

Jacob Sterling, Head of Decarbonisation at Maersk and Chris Gear, Project Director for the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) FlyZero initiative discuss point 6 on jet zero and green shipping.

Shipping and flying currently accounts for about 3% of the world’s C02 emissions. Simply stopping the use of aeroplanes and vessels is not an option, so Westminster has committed to putting the UK at the “forefront” of low carbon travel.

This sixth instalment of the 10 Point Pod explores the UK’s efforts in finding initiative solutions to global aviation and maritime emissions, and its potential to effectively become the home of green ships and planes.

This episode highlights:

  • Shipping and aviation industries are likely to continue to grow in the coming decades, making a greater need for decarbonisation.
  • Ministers have pledged to invest in research and development to drive the creation of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF), while a Jet Zero Council has been launched to promote the adoption of new technologies.
  • The key challenge for the aviation and shipping industry is finding the appropriate energy source and scaling this up. In addition, technology and industrial capabilities are crucial to finding solutions to the fuels and equipment that will be used in aircrafts and shipping vessels.
