About the Conference

The National Tax Conference is a first-of-its-kind event in Malta, dedicated to exploring the origins, evolution, and wider societal impact of taxation within Maltese society. Moving beyond traditional tax debates centred on the technicalities and granular detail of legislation, the conference adopts a broader interdisciplinary perspective, examining taxation as a social, economic, political, and historical phenomenon.

Bringing together economists, legal scholars, historians, sociologists, social scientists, policy professionals, and members of the public, the conference seeks to foster a richer understanding of the role taxation has played in shaping Malta's development.

Throughout the event, attendees will have the opportunity to view previously unpublished historical photographs from the National Archives of Malta, alongside period caricatures and contemporary visual material relating to the introduction of income tax. The conference will also unveil new research findings shedding fresh light on the circumstances surrounding the introduction of income tax in Malta in 1948 and its impact on Maltese society.
