Acknowledging this gap between AI adoption and output, hyperscalers have been shifting their focus beyond platforms and infrastructure toward an equally fundamental AI transformation challenge: practical implementation that brings lasting business outcomes.
As Client Zero for many of Microsoft’s leading innovations, the global EY organization has embraced the Frontier Firm journey as a human-led, agent-assisted enterprise redesigning workflows, decision-making and operating models around AI. Today, we leverage the lessons we learned from our transformation to help clients navigate and accelerate their own Frontier journey.
Four lessons we’ve learned as Client Zero
1. Intelligence is the asset
The value did not come from the technology itself. It came from what we pointed it at: our data, our institutional knowledge, our workflows and the way our people make decisions.
2. Trust is what made scale possible
We built controls in from the start across the global EY network of independent member firms. Governance and our Responsible AI approach did not slow adoption down — they are the reason our people trusted the technology enough to use it.
3. Deployment was the easy part
Standing up GenAI was fast. The gains came later, from deciding what our agents should actually do, from feedback loops that kept improving how our people and our agents work together, and from the harder work of changing how the work itself is done.
4. Neither organization could have done this alone
Microsoft brought platform and engineering depth, and early access to technology still being built. We brought decades of experience helping organizations transform how work gets done, along with deep experience in strategy, operations, risk, governance and workforce change. Together, we tested, refined and scaled AI in a complex global enterprise, generating insights that now help organizations accelerate their own transformation journeys.
