Overview

This 8-session course is a unique opportunity to obtain a very good theoretical and practical understanding of how to draw up a good and sound business plan and draw up the financial plan supporting the business plan. 

Who Should Attend?

This course is ideal both for newcomers in the Business planning and Financial modelling sphere but also for more experienced learners who have been working in finance but wish to brush up their technical knowledge in an intensive manner or fill in certain gaps and clarify certain issues that there might be relating to certain aspects of financial modelling or business planning.

Entry Requirements

  • Basic understanding of English Language
  • Basic knowledge of accounting, financial and business terms
  • Basic knowledge of Mircosoft Excel

Mode of attendance

This 50 hours part-time course will be delivered face-to-face at the EY Connect Centre located at EY Regional Business Center, Achille Ferris Street, Msida MSD1751. The course will be structured as following:

  • 7 trainer-led sessions of 3 hours each and one final session of 4 hours (total contact hours: 25 hours).
  • 25 hours of self-study would be required.

Award and ECTS accreditation

An Award in Business Planning and Financial Modelling (EQF/MQF 6) will be issued to participants who attended all classes. EY Connect Learning is licensed as a Higher Education Institution by the MFHEA (Licence number: 2011-011) and 2 ECTS will be accredited to participants.

  • Module 1 - Introduction - 02 November 2023 | 14.00 - 17.30

    This unit will introduce business plans, the use cases, the different users of business plans and the timeframe during which business plans are created. 

  • Module 2 - Effective business plan writing - 09 November 2023 | 14.00 - 17.30

    This unit will define what an effective business plan is, the methodology followed to create one and various drivers that affect creating an effective business plan.

  • Module 3 - Steps to write an effective business plan - 16 November 2023 | 14.00 - 17.30

    This unit will define and discuss, in detail, the process and steps followed to achieve a properly structured business plan.

  • Module 4 - Outline of a business plan - 23 November 2023 | 14.00 - 17.30

    This unit will discuss the details of the various sections that go into an effective business plan and the proper presentation manner to highlight the key important information to the reader. 

  • Module 5 - Financial modelling fundamentals - 30 November 2023 | 14.00 - 17.30

    During this unit the trainers will show and explain how to build a financial model from scratch by working in Excel. The workshop covers the importance of designing a well-structured model and incorporating financial modelling best practices. Topics that will be covered include:

    • Apply a structured and organised approach to financial modelling in Excel  
    • Outline the characteristics of good financial models  
    • Explain the significance of planning and preparation of your model structure  
    • Build from operating revenues down to operating profit 
    • Understand the importance of error checking  
    • Use keyboard shortcuts in Excel to save time and be more efficient 
  • Module 6 - Financial modelling: building a 3-statement model (session 1) - 7 December 2023 | 14.00 - 17.30

    During this unit the trainers will continue building on the previous unit by showing how to use information and develop it into a three statement model. Topics that will be covered include:

    • Developing the statement of comprehensive income (income statement) and statement of financial position (balance sheet)  
    • Building debt and financing schedules  
    • Developing a cash flow statement  
    • Understanding the linkage between the three statements, and how inputs in one are outputs in another 
    • Analyse data using data tables, pivot tables, and other functions  
    • Use advanced formulas and functions to enhance the functionality of financial models 
  • Module 6 - Financial modelling: building a 3-statement model (session 2) - 14 December 2023 | 14.00 - 17.30

    During this unit the trainers will continue building on the previous unit by showing how to use information and develop it into a three statement model. Topics that will be covered include:

  • Module 7 - Presentation of business plans - 11 January 2024 | 14.00 - 18.30

    During this session, which will be in the form of a tutorial, the participants will need to present their business plan and discuss their idea. The trainers will provide feedback to the participants. Each participant will then need to submit their final business plan as part of the assessment. 

Tutors

Mark Spiteri is a Senior Manager in EY’s Strategy & Transactions team where he joined in 2022 with over 13 years professional experience in the investment management, financial services and iGaming industries. After a spell of 8 years in several hedge funds trading in commodities, securitization and private equity, Mark joined a listed iGaming company working in financial modelling and corporate finance and then managed the strategy function responsible for M&A research once the company was acquired by a NYSE-listed entertainment company. He holds an BSc (Hons) in Banking & Finance and is a CFA Charterholder since 2014.

Mohanalakshmi Ravi, is a Manager in EY Malta and a highly accomplished chartered accountant with over 8 years of experience in finance and accounting. She has a strong background in assurance and financial management. Mohana worked at Ernst & Young - India, conducting audits and analyzing financial statements. She then transitioned to EY's Strategy and Transactions team in Malta, where she excelled in financial due diligence projects. Mohana also served as the Head of Accounts at Vivriti Capital before joining EY Malta, overseeing financial reporting and contributing to the organization's success. She is known for her expertise in financial and risk management, constantly striving for professional growth and staying up-to-date with industry advancements.

Kieth Andaya is a Senior Consultant in EY, within the Strategy & Transactions practice. He has more than 6 years of experience in business modelling, valuations, and financial due diligence with clients  involved in different industries such as financial services organizations, power & utilities, oil & gas, government and public sector, infrastructure, consumer products and retail, mining & metals, and real estate, hospitality and construction. He has a degree in Accountancy and Management Accounting with a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) title and an Advanced Financial Modeler (AFM) certification. Kieth also has experience in government and corporate infrastructure advice, including the delivery of the UK Prosperity Fund’s ASEAN Low Carbon Energy Programme and 2050 PH Long-term Climate Strategies.

Gianluca Trapani, is an Senior Consultant within EY Malta’s Strategy and Transactions practice, with experience in M&A transactions across Europe, the Middle East, and Northern Africa. His expertise lies in M&A financial due diligence consulting, where he assists clients in identifying transaction value drivers, improving M&A deal structures, mitigating risks, and challenging assumptions about future performance. He holds a first-class BSc (Hons) in Business Administration with International Business from Royal Holloway, University of London, and an MSc in Global Finance from Bayes Business School - City, University of London.
