At 49, Mitchell Eviston was facing terminal liver cancer and planning his own funeral. When a successful liver transplant added decades to his life, the veteran corporate agriculture professional determined his next chapter would be purpose-driven. Drawing on three decades of industry experience, Eviston founded Meristem Crop Performance Group to help US farmers maximize yields while reducing costs.

 

Meristem initially focused on supply chain efficiency and high-performance agricultural products, aiming to provide high-quality crop inputs at 30% less cost by streamlining distribution. The company’s breakthrough came when Eviston and his team seized on the transformative potential of biologicals, agricultural products derived from living organisms.

 

Eviston spearheaded development of BIO-CAPSULE Technology, the first biological system delivering live microbes directly to plants at the point of use. Through technology that enhances soil health, reduces reliance on synthetic chemicals and fertilizers, and improves crop resilience, Meristem makes biological farming accessible and practical. The company’s innovative technologies unlock nutrients from crop residue, decrease runoff, and support regenerative practices that lower carbon intensity and conserve resources.

 

Building on this foundation of innovation and purpose, Eviston leads with a farmer-first philosophy: “If you take care of the farmers, the farmers will take care of you,” he says. He empowers his employees to act as entrepreneurs, fostering a culture of innovation where customer-driven ideas are encouraged. Per a company rule, all Meristem salespeople must answer all calls from farmers, no matter what; these “farm calls” have become a key nonfinancial company metric.

 

Meristem’s growth has been remarkable, expanding from a single dealer partnership to more than 300 partnerships today. The company has unlocked new distribution channels, helping partners increase profits through innovative planter box systems and biological products. With plans for global expansion, Meristem is well-positioned for continued success as it looks to enter markets in Brazil, South Africa and Europe to bring its innovative technology to farmers around the globe.
