Why business readiness is critical for supply chain AI

In the age of AI supply chains, a business-readiness strategy is a crucial step for realizing returns on tech investment.

In brief
  • AI is reshaping supply chain in more ways than any other technology transformation.
  • The traditional change management approach to transformation is no longer sufficient for the speed and scale of the AI era.
  • Supply chain leaders should focus on redefining operating models, upskilling workforces and modernizing Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Supply chain leaders have very quickly shifted mindsets around AI. The conversation has rapidly moved from if and when AI technologies will integrate into supply chain operations, to how ready organizations are for the change. A 2025 global EY survey highlighted that as many as three-quarters of organizations now intend to deploy generative AI (GenAI) technologies into their supply chains and 80% believe doing so will reinvent how they fundamentally operate. Nearly as many — 70% — also say failing to integrate GenAI will leave them at a competitive disadvantage.1

Despite this attitudinal sea change among leaders, one major challenge persists. In the past, technology implementations focused on training and communications — the how, when and why of coming technology change. But AI is different. Successful AI transformation demands a new level of business-readiness in three crucial areas: reshaping processes and governance, redefining employee roles and related upskilling requirements, and realignment and modernization of personal and organizational KPIs across the business.

As organizations approach AI transformation, too many attempt to simply add new technologies to their existing — but quickly aging — workflows and technology environments. This kind of bolt-on approach means two things. The promise of AI in reshaping supply chain efficiencies and outputs will never be truly realized, and those organizations that take a more holistic, business-ready approach will be the ones that win in the emerging age of AI-driven supply chain operations. Enterprise-wide preparation is no longer a nice-to-have but an imperative step toward success that includes a review of end-to-end processes, new modeling and crucial changes to policies and controls.
