Agentic AI is the buzzword on every executive’s lips today — much discussed but also misunderstood in a swirl of marketing hype. After generative AI (GenAI) exploded on the scene, assistants that augment human talent through prompts in a chat interface became ubiquitous. But AI agents represent the next evolution from robotic process automation into intelligent orchestration:
- Perception: Sensing, interpreting and contextualizing data — including textual or visual inputs — to recognize when a task should be initiated and when it is completed
- Interaction: Communicating, acting with and reacting to humans, systems and other agents, facilitating meaningful exchanges of information and collaboration in an ecosystem
- Autonomy: Operating independently, making decisions and performing tasks without the need for human intervention, driving innovation and productivity
A new paradigm of productivity
Executives often speak of AI as though the “a” just means “automation.” But agents are able to exercise informed judgment and meaningfully collaborate with humans and other agents, changing the very nature of how work is completed, how much and by whom.
